Amorphous plastic, when unmodified hyaline, hard and brittle. Oft – except for disposables – when modified used with butadiene for so-called shockproof polystyrene. Shockproof polystyrene (SB, MIPS, HIPS) is opaque. SB exists in several types of toughness which varies by the butadiene content. SB has some similarities to ABS, but it does not e.g. have as fine a surface finish. The price other the other hand is more favourable. Typically used for disposable cutlery, furniture legs, handwheels, toys etc. Density approx. 1,05 g/cm³ (dependent on the butadiene content). Glueable. Maximum use temperature, unstressed approx. 80º C.
